About

Welcome to Commando Diving, a site dedicated to sharing the joys of recreational scuba diving and exploring the underwater world. Through this site you will be able to experience the diving adventures of my buddies and me, as we dive into it to photograph and video beautiful undersea flora and fauna, explore wrecks, hunt lobster, flounder, and scallops, discover artifacts, and more.

Why Commando Diving

The name for this site, Commando Diving, comes from my boat, dubbed the Sport Commando III, a 15.5 foot 2006 Zodiac 9-Man Pro, rigid inflatable, powered by a 50 HP E-tec Bombardier/Evinrude outboard motor. It’s an extremely rugged, stable, low-cost dive platform, which along with its two previous namesake iterations has formed the core of my dive experiences in Massachusetts and elsewhere.

Many years ago, I was at once captivated by the legendary TV series, Sea Hunt, the tales of pirates, and the exploits of Navy Commandos, who were launched into action and recovered with inflatable boats. A local legendary wreck diver and dive shop owner used a small 12.5 foot long inflatable as his dive adventure platform, too. I decided that was the boat for me, and it has served me well ever since. Like the boats, I saw Commandos as a rugged military group. Those of us whom you will meet through this site are hardy dedicated divers. A couple of us have the equipment and drive to dive every month of the year. Others are consummate divers who enjoy the sport when surface and underwater temperatures are more reasonable. Some of us belong to local dive clubs such as the South Shore Neptunes or the Divers of MassBay. Others are unaffiliated. What unites us is our love for the underwater world and the beauty, joy, and sense of wonder it engenders. In my mind we are Commando divers. We hope you will join us on our journey, which will involve not just Commando, but other platforms and dive venues as well. Join us and enjoy the adventure, sites, and sounds as much as we do when we go Commando Diving Into It!
